Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Inner city children never experience the excitement of planting seeds, nurturing them or watching them grow. I am a first grade teacher in a Hispanic-dominated urban school district in New Jersey. All of my children receive free or reduced lunch and have had very limited life experiences.
My children are so inquisitive. They want to know the "whys" and "hows" of just about everything and they are not satisfied until their questions are answered. Thanks to generous donors, my children have already experienced the life cycles of tadpoles, caterpillars, ladybugs and mealworms. They honor the environment and the needs of all of life's creatures. However, we do not have the money in our budget to provide these extra xperiences.
In order to quench their curiosity, I would like to receive materials to create a classroom greenhouse. I think it is essential to provide experiences which extend beyond the confines of our textbooks and continue to help them appreciate the beauties of our world. By complimenting the greenhouse with authentic, quality, children's literature, students will gain a better understanding of our world and the importance of protecting it.
Can you imagine first graders, who have never planted or nurtured a seed, experiencing this for the very first time? To me, that's what learning is about! And, you would make it possible for helping by providing the means for this wonder-full opportunity. It just would not be possible without your support.
