Our school is a Title I school. Most of our students are from a low socioeconomic background. The students often lack experiences that their peers in other schools take for granted. It is our desire to give these students the opportunity to learn all about how food grows and to experience the satisfaction of growing something and then enjoying the harvest of fruits and vegetables.
Did you ever experience growing vegetables or fruits as a child?
I didn't and most of the students at our school haven't either. Although our class is kindergarten level, the learning will not stop with them. The students from all grade levels can see "how our garden grows". The garden will provide all our students an opportunity to know the pride that can come from tending the land and caring for the crops. They will enjoy eating the fruits and vegetables they have grown. We must give our children the opportunity to learn that they can be self-sufficient. Students thrive when given hands-on learning activities, and the skills learned in a garden will be priceless for them. I wish you could see their faces as they see the new plants sprout through the soil.
My Project
The items we have requested will help in the growth and maintenance of our community garden throughout the year. The rototiller will allow us to reestablish and add additional planting beds. We need the timer and garden hoses to establish a sprinkler system that can work when students are not present. The sprinkler system will help keep the plants healthy and ready for the next school year.
Our goal is to extend student learning from the classroom to an outdoor educational environment that is fun, engaging, and rigorous.
Some students do not understand where the food in the grocery store actually comes from. The students are enjoying working in the garden. They are discovering the process of preparing the garden beds and planting seeds and seedlings. The anticipation is building for a bountiful harvest in the upcoming months. The equipment such as clippers we are requesting will help ensure there are healthy fruits and vegetables to harvest.
With your support and donation, we will continue to find new and exciting ways to educate our students about "How our garden grows".
