Many children (and adults!) have problems with spelling, especially as we do everything on computers that can check spelling for you. I feel that it is still very important for children to learn to spell as hopefully it will be a skill they carry with them their entire life!
This is easier said than done, however. Most of my students come from families that are not very educated and/or do not speak English, so their parents can't help them much. Also, in class, having 20 students yelling out, "How do you spell this word?" gets a little frustrating and not very productive.
I am asking for spelling dictionaries. These are wonderful things that I found a few years ago - they have common words spelled and blanks for the children to write other words that might come up. Then, if a child needs to learn how to spell 'cousin' for example, I only have to tell them once and the permanently have it in their dictionary. The year I used these, (and we used them ALL day, EVERY day) I noticed that spelling improved dramatically! It also made them much more self-sufficient.
The journals are from the same people and provide writing practice with word banks for seasonal topics. They are a great help in practicing writing. Cursive is another skill that they children don't get enough practice with.
