How Do Belief Systems Influence Decisions? Reading a Novel!

My students need 38 individual copies of the novel "Native Son".

  • $549 goal

This project expired on February 3, 2011.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My Students

Many of my students come from homes where there are few if any books. Many have not yet experienced the love of literature. By reading this powerful novel with controversial themes, they will undoubtedly experience the feeling of being emotionally engaged with a piece of literature.

Most of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and many come from families in which the first language is not English.

Most of those in this course, in Senior English, (where the novel in this project will be read) will be the first in their families to go to college when they graduate in June.

My Project

The themes in this novel are powerful and emotional. They will consider how beliefs influence actions, making personal connections to this historically based text. While my students may have previously been disengaged when assigned texts in their literature classes, this one is sure to have them reading more than they thought they could. They will be engaging in heated classroom discussions and seminars, and writing a critical, text based essay.

My students are bound to be emotionally involved in the work I will ask them to do.

Upon completing the rigorous work I will ask of them, they will no doubt feel proud of themselves, more prepared for college, and have experienced the love of literature.
