Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to school every day eager to learn. I teach 7th grade social studies in a large, urban district. There are one hundred and fifty three students in five sections.

The majority of my students identify as Hispanic/Latino, and most speak Spanish as their first language.

Several students start the year speaking no English. Despite the challenges they face these students are creative, and they love reading diverse books, technology, music, and art.

The families of my students truly want the best for their children and place a high value on education but often lack the means to provide the enrichment activities and additional resources that are necessary for their children to achieve educational success.

My Project

7th grade students learn about the ancient civilizations in Social Studies. The students are going to be required to complete a project that is told from the perspective of a person living in that time period. These books give a lot of information in a way that 7th grade students can understand. Even my reluctant readers will try a book with interesting illustrations .

My students love to read but many lack access to high interest, relevant reading material.

Having these “You Wouldn’t Want to Be...” books in my classroom will allow the students to check out and read books to complete their project. Students will be able to spend their time reading which will increase their reading stamina and fluency while they are also getting content they need for Social Studies.
