Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of 30 happy and energetic kindergartners. Each day they walk into school with smiles on their faces ready to learn something new. They come from low socioeconomic backgrounds but all share a common love for learning! My goal as a teacher is to make learning fun. I want my students to be creative and comfortable in expressing and sharing their ideas and feelings when learning. My school staff and administration is very supportive and all want what is best for the students. However, due to budget cuts funding for classroom needs has been limited. My students deserve the best!
My Project
My students need hands-on math materials to help build their understanding of number sense of ten. My students need dice to use in math centers for one-to-one correspondence, greater than, less than, and adding and subtracting activities. They also need plastic numbers to use for number recognition and to make addition and subtraction equations. Having the ten frame pouches for each student would be amazing to have during whole group time and they could also use them in center time too. The students would use the counters and frames to figure out what makes ten. After deciding on what makes ten with the counters the students can write an equation.
You may ask yourself, "What is a Rekenrek?" It is a hands-on tool that helps students to see numbers in groups of five and ten.
The students are able to move the beads to represent various numbers. This tool offers the students strategies for composing and decomposing numbers.
The materials that are requested will help the students during whole group and small group center activities and to build their confidence in truly understanding the concept of ten. Having hands-on materials are much more valuable for kindergarten students to understand math concepts than being taught from a workbook. Any donation would be greatly appreciated!
