I teach Kindergarten through 5th grade ESL in a high-needs school in an immigrant neighborhood. A fellow teacher and I also advise a group of 4th and 5th grade students in an after school Environmental Education program. Over the last few years, we have made a lot of changes to our school to help our students and our building become more "green." We have started and maintained a successful recycling program, organized an annual, school-wide book barter, and encouraged teachers to integrate environmentally-themed lessons into their everyday teaching.
Since we began our recycling program in 2006, all of our students have taken a passionate interest in caring for their environment. They now know that if they don't care for their Earth, it may not be the same for future generations. Our students are super recyclers, but they want to know what else they can do to help the Earth.
The book "10 Things I Can Do to Help My World" is perfect for our English Language Learners. It has straight-forward text and beautiful pictures to prompt discussions. It also introduces children to things other than recycling that they can do themselves to care for the environment, like planting seeds and reusing bags. Our hope is that our young students will take what they learn in school about caring for the Earth and teach their families and friends how to do the same.
This is your chance to make our world a better, cleaner place. I truly believe that educating our young children about our Earth and how to care for it is the solution to many of the problems that our environment faces today. Your donation would deepen our students' love for their environment and spark in them ideas of more ways that they can help the Earth.
Thank you!
