Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine discovering new worlds or far away planets? Books, globes, and atlases are a child's way to open doors to new places. Having these materials are critically necessary to help my students find answers to their question and explore exotic, new places!
My school is located in a large, metropolitan area that has high poverty and a limited budget for Science and Social Studies books and materials.
More than 95% of our children receive free or reduced lunch. Few of them have had experiences outside the neighborhood. This makes their world very small. Our current reading program often introduces new places to the students. My second graders are always curious about these locations and have many questions, but with limited background knowledge, it is difficult for them to make the necessary connections with the text. I know that if these materials were readily available to them, they would be some of the most used and coveted books in our classroom library. This would enrich their understanding of new worlds, people, and places. My children could see the world as a place full of new people, places and possibilities.
My Project
This project could inspire my students to see beyond their world and dream of a better place. Having these books, globes, and atlases in our classroom would help them grow in their knowledge of the world. Our second grade Science and Social Studies curriculum include teaching the concepts of identifying geographic features, using maps and globes, and learning about our universe. These materials would allow me, the teacher, to introduce new concepts using current information and give a clearer presentation, but more importantly, these materials would be available in our classroom library for independent learning.
Your donation will allow my students to see outside of their neighborhood and expand their world.
By putting these materials into the hands of my students you are opening their eyes to new, exciting places and far away planets. And who knows where this newfound knowledge might take them?
