Help me give my students the tools to engage in experimentation! With these pulse oximeters, students will be able to measure heart rate and blood oxygen levels.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently work with high school freshmen and sophomores in the San Francisco Bay Area, and we are pushing to work with a more model based curriculum for our science classes. One of the topics that I find most challenging for my students is DNA--it is such a small phenomenon, that I hope to make it more tangible and interactive.
My students come from various backgrounds, and are working together in focused group work within the the science and AVID courses that I teach.
This allows them to work on development of their social and emotional learning needs while exploring science content. They rely on the conversation and questioning brought up by their peers.
My Project
It is so important for students to have a clear understanding of their body systems and how they interact with each other. I want my students to understand not just how each organ works, but how they are part of a bigger system. For example, when studying the respiratory system, I want my students to know how the lungs and diaphragm work together to inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. But, they need to understand the bigger picture, how the circulatory system is involved to deliver oxygen to the cells, and removes waste, Carbon Dioxide.
Students will use pulse oximeters in a lab to measure both their heart rate and the blood oxygen saturation levels, at rest, and after exercise.
They will then make the connections between the two systems to see what factors affect the rate of cellular respiration!
