Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a small rural town in Nevada. My classes consist of special education students and general education students, all of whom can better grasp more difficult concepts and learn and remember content with hands-on manipulatives.
My students come from many different backgrounds, but all have an eager sense of questioning and a willingness to discover science in new ways.
They take on tough challenges, and are excited about working together to "dissect" more difficult scientific ideas and issues.
Currently, my students are completing a Citizen Science Project, wherein students are gathering data regarding trash, plastic, and waste. Students are studying how massive amounts of plastic are affecting the oceans, and they are realizing just how much humans are impacting the biggest ecosystem on our beloved planet Earth.
Students are learning about how different ocean organisms are affected by plastic depending on their structure and enteric systems. By dissecting organisms and comparing and contrasting their different body systems, students will see how plastic and garbage can affect whether ocean creatures live or die.
My Project
In order for students to learn and remember content, they need to be engaged in real-life activities where they can compare and contrast organisms and their different parts.
My Marine Science students need to see and manipulate our many ocean creatures - especially because many of them have never physically been to the ocean!
By dissecting both smaller and larger ocean creatures, students will see how they are similar and different, to include their mouths, jaws, and other feeding mechanisms.
With this grant, we will be purchasing shark and starfish organisms for students to dissect. By comparing and contrasting anatomies, students automatically go to higher levels of thinking, fine-tuning their analytical skills to be a 21st century problem solver!
