Sixth grade is an exciting transition into young adulthood! It is a special time for learning social skills, developing responsibility, and growing as a learner. For some, it can be a time for a learning slump, but small changes can help curve that trend.
Our scholars are courageous, adventurous, and resourceful.
They have excelled despite a few luxuries in our classrooms. I am proud of our scholars because they assiduously pursue achievement despite the challenges of our rural school classroom. In fact, so many of them are right on the threshold of becoming and or maintaining advanced or proficient status on their test scores, and you can help! Please help me help these wonderful scholars; they are truly an inspiration to us all.
My Project
This set of chapter books will be used to anchor my unit on space. We will read this realistic, science fiction book to build interest in exploring non-fiction text centered around space topics. I will plan experiments based on our space exploration theme and will work in a space, reader's theater as well to build reading fluency. There are so many possibilities with the right anchor text in which to build a unit.
Are there future astronauts in my room?
I ask myself questions like this one anytime I explore new topics of interest in my classroom. Hopefully, this reading experience will get my students to think about various careers associated with space exploration or science in general, and it will expose them to more vocabulary rich texts in the process.
