Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I want to be
like the waves on the sea,
like the clouds in the wind,
but I'm me.
One day I'll jump
out of my skin.
I'll shake the sky
like a hundred violins."
-Sandra Cisneros
My students have a thousand obstacles in their way.
They come from a high-needs district, most of them are immigrants or come from immigrant families, many of them come from single parent homes that can barely make ends meet. Every day is a struggle. These students have more "problems" than I could ever imagine or imagine being able to handle at age 11.
What don't my students have a problem with? MOTIVATION!! For the first time, in a long time, ALL of my students want to succeed and work hard. They love to write and each one of my students has an amazing story to tell. They may be young, but their incredible stories are inspirational to me, and each other.
My Project
We are currently reading the novel "House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros. The students love it because they can easily identify with the vignettes.
We were so inspired by this story, that we started to create our own books based on the vignettes we read in the novel. Students are writing short narratives that they would like to publish in these requested blank hardcover books.
This makes the task more authentic for the students and they are over-the-moon-excited about the prospect of being able to become a real-life author by making a real hardcover book.
Your donation will make ALL of the difference in my classroom.
By donating to my project, you will inspire a student to truly believe that their writing matters and that their words can be powerful.
You will help a student realize that even at age 11, they can genuinely be the author of their own story.
