This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We all have the favorite book we read and loved in school. Sandra Cisneros's House on Mango Street is one I would love to teach!

Many of my students are English Language Learners who come from a Latino background, so House on Mango Street is the perfect coming-of-age book that will resonate with them with its enduring theme and engaging plot line.

Please help us expand our classroom library with this wonderful book.

My Project

Sandra Cisneros's House on Mango Street is an inspiring, empowering book about Esperanza Cordero, a young Latina girl. Enduring themes within the book include her quest for a better life and Esperanza's promise to come back "for the ones I left behind." Even the most reluctant readers will "love to learn" with House on Mango Street. As a culminating project, students will create Esperanza's scrapbook based on textual evidence from the book.

Many of my students don't read or won't read.

With a contemporary but profound book, such as House on Mango Street, my students will be BEGGING to read! Alongside the fast-paced plot line, House on Mango Street is perfect for small group literature circles, which help students become independent readers.
