Our 2000 students come from a variety of backgrounds and are full of diversity (ethnic, socioeconomic, sexual identity, and more.). They are highly motivated to succeed. We are a suburban school whose population is 60% open enrolled from students across the district. Parents choose their students to attend to allow them the opportunities to experience our many programs and courses.
My Project
Every year our students across grade levels have assignments in a variety of classes that require academic researching skills. We currently have some print resources to support their research, but would very much like to increase the number of options covering current topics in science and math. These books are frequently more expensive and out of the range of our tiny budget.
The books selected cover a number of current issues in the areas of science and math.
It is crucial that our students learn to become proficient users of information using in-depth research skills based on authoritative resources. Books that show differing takes on hot button issues provide students with the opportunity to learn about multiple viewpoints and reflect on a deeper level about the information and data they have gathered. They form an understanding of why these topics are newsworthy as well as how to form cogent thesis statements or discussion points.
These books covering science and math topics including Rna/DNA, microbes, climate change, gamma rays, and more will help us balance the offerings in our library for students. We would love to be able to add these resources to our collection.
