I'm a NYC Department of Education Pre-K Teacher at P.S./I.S. 323 in Brownsville, NY. My school is a title one school and about 95% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price school lunch. My classroom crowds eighteen 3-5 year olds into a space that is poorly ventilated and incredibly difficult to be in in the late spring/early summer/early autumn months. Heat during these months causes dehydration and exhaustion in students and destroys their energy and focus in the classroom. Pre-K children have to constantly move around and they are always complaining about how hot it is. I tried buying a fan, but I thought it was too dangerous to put it in my classroom because I was afraid of someone putting their hands in it. With an air conditioner the children can be cool and less dehydrated. They can focus on their work instead of how hot it is. In response to this problem, I'm requesting a portable air conditioning unit for the classroom so students will be able to effectively deal with the humidity and heat that ruin many educational opportunities. Thank you for helping us to create a more comfortable environment in which to learn.
