Our elementary is fortunate to serve many military families, which makes the learning environment very transient. More than 50% of the students in my classroom have at least 1 parent in the military. This requires students and teachers to be flexible in this ever changing environment.
Our classroom is diverse in many ways!
Our classroom includes all kinds of learners, including those from a variety of socioeconomic statuses, which means that my students come to school from a variety of neighborhoods, including on base military housing, apartments, trailer parks and also neighborhoods with single family homes.
Our classroom is inclusion, so we also have students with special needs. While we have several students diagnosed with ADHD in our classroom, I have noticed that most of the students in my classroom are busy and do best when accommodations have been made to exert energy throughout the day, so that they can then focus on learning.
My Project
You can often find our students using Hot Dot pens and flash cards to practice learned skills, independently, during reading and math workstations. Students are often able to work through mistakes and learn independently using Hot Dots materials. Hot Dots can be used independently in the classroom, because students are able to check their answers after they have solved each problem. If students need help working through an activity, they can be found collaborating with peers or conferring with the teacher.
We need more Hot Dots pens in our classroom to reinforce learned materials during independent practice.
Hot Dots create quite a few teachable moments in our classroom! Our students love them!
