This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are full of energy which is awesome for a physical education class. They are rambunctious and challenging. They are ready to move and can not standstill. Whether in the gym, in a classroom setting or out in the field with the team, they are an amazing group of young people.
It is a challenge to discover how best to address each of their individuals needs but the journey to get there is fantastic.
Our school is a Title I school in Atlanta where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students are facing many socioeconomic challenges that hinder their academic success. As I observe them interact with one another, enthused with the energy from a game, I regain my conviction that a future is possible and achievable for all my students.
My Project
A hot dog machine is going to make us all into Superheroes. There have been too many days when I gave away my last snack to a student and had to tell another that It was all I had. I would like to eradicate hunger in my classroom at least for a few minutes at a time. I want my children to know that if they can make it long enough to come to me, there will be at least a hot dog for them.
I don't ever want to see the haunting look in the face of a hungry child.
I can plan the most amazing lessons and facilitate the most creative activities but my audience when hungry is a feeble audience. I want my children to powered up and be ready to learn. There is hope for our future.
