What's your New Year's resolution? Ours is to get moving. Help my students get a jump start to an active and healthy lifestyle with engaging exercise activities that get them motivated and moving.
Aloha from na keiki o Hawai'i.
My preschool special education class provides early intervention services to qualifying special needs children. My class has 8 students, ages 3-5 years. My school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry. Year after year I have students for whom gross motor and coordination activities are challenging. My students need ways to practice various motor skills (jumping, throwing and catching), and build muscle strength and control through added diversity to their outside play options.
My students need gross motor materials: Foam Flyers and Hop-Along Balls to diversify their play time and get them moving! This is a project based on success. These bouncy balls are cool looking--they look like balls with horns. I know because I have gotten two of them in a previous project. They are a favorite with the students because of those hang-onto horns. But in a classroom full of energetic preschoolers, two of them just isn't enough--everyone wants a turn. We need more kids to get on the ball with more balls. This is a project based on hard knocks. The flying disks I have are 16 years old. The reason they've held up so long is because they are made of an extremely hard plastic. Playing with flying disks should be a social exchange game, instead the kids are dodging them because watch out! they hurt to catch. So primarily it's a solo toss and retrieve activity, and I have to position the students away from the other children so no one gets hit. I'm thrilled to find these soft disks, designed for painless catching so that my students can learn how to throw and catch with each other.
"Childhood is the time to begin the development of active, healthy lifestyles.
Placing the child on the road to a lifetime of movement should begin early to ensure a lifetime of good health." --Council on Physical Education for Children. With your help, my students will get moving, have fun and get off to some healthy habits. Resolution accomplished!Read More
