Hope You Don't MIND Supporting Mindfulness in the Classroom!
I need support in order to start my journey in becoming a certified mindfulness teacher through the Mindful Schools year long online and in person training.
My students are sweet kindergartners through 6th graders who come to work with me in our school's Learning Center to get much needed support with reading, math, or both. I am the Impact teacher at an elementary school and I work with Tier 3 students.
Over my 26 years of teaching, I have seen a huge increase in my students' anxiety which is why I have taken an interest in my new passion, incorporating mindfulness into the classroom.
I have the pleasure of working with small groups of students all day. I have used the mindfulness skills I have taught myself in my own practice of it with my students. In doing so, I have seen great benefits including a decrease in their anxiety and an increase in their confidence. This has led to more student success in not only my classroom but also in their core classrooms. They are able to take the mindfulness skills that they have learned and use them anywhere.
My Project
My long term goal is to complete the mindfulness certification program through Mindful Schools in order to become a Mindful Schools Certified Mindfulness Instructor (CMI). This will allow me to guide basic mindfulness practices in any school. The prerequisites for this program are 2 of their online courses, Mindfulness Fundamentals and Mindful Educator Essentials.
As a Mindful Schools CMI, I will be qualified to use the Mindful Schools K-12 curriculum to adapt mindfulness programs, teach others the fundamental practices and principles of mindfulness, lead professional development efforts related to mindfulness practice , and support efforts to design a mindfulness program for school communities.
In these 2 prerequisite courses I will be introduced to science, strategies, and mindful practices that support positive states of mind like gratitude, kindness, joy, and compassion. I will also learn curriculum to incorporating immediately with my students in order to help improve their emotional regulation, focus, and engagement. I will also share all that I learn with my colleagues, especially my Learning Center team.
