My students need a hands-on science experience that is engaging.
My students come from diverse backgrounds.
I have gifted and special needs, those learning English and those learning to get along. I teach 125 students a day and have a very limited supply budget, which is cut each year. I want to maintain the same level of hands-on experiences that I always have. I don't want adult problems, like budget cuts, to penalize student learners.
I know that there are computers out there that offer virtual dissections and animated science activities. I am not asking for computers, but the actual physical specimens to dissect.
My Project
Donations will allow my students a hands-on experience, which makes all the difference in their learning. Purchasing actual preserved frogs to dissect will provide a hands-on experience. The alternative is a computer-generated, animated virtual lab which just isn't the same. Kids play video games all the time, they want a real lab experience.
The actual dissection of a frog is one of those projects that a middle schooler will remember forever.
"I remember Mrs. C's class, she is the one who helped me dissect that frog. I learned so much."
This is the kind of project that my students are able to apply to their own bodies and learning the body systems helps to keep them healthier and more informed.
