Curious, playful and inocently wiggly attention seekers fill the hallways of my school. Their smiles light up the building, and their excitement when trying new things and exploring new places is contagious. Educators across the globe likely have similar observations about their students, but my students are something special. My students are still recovering from Category 4 Irma, are living with multiple families due to lack of housing, and rely on free breakfast and lunch as their food for the day. Making it to school everyday is hard enough, but coming in with smiles and an eagerness to learn despite their circumstances is remarkable.
My Project
Kids are wiggly, plain and simple. They need movement, constant stimulation and opportunities to run, play and just be a kid. Research shows that greater opportunities for movement increases not only academic success, but behavioral, social and emotional development. Despite what the research says, budget constraints and increasing academic demands have shortened recess and other activities young children require for even and healthy development.
This project will allow the installation of an indoor sensory path where classes or individual students will be able to get their wiggles out in a fun and unique way.
Right now the only options for them are a small playground or an empty field. If it rains, which it often does in South Florida, they have to do indoor recess where they remain in their rooms. With the non-traditional housing and post-Irma stress at home our kids need a healthy outlet for their pent up energy and emotions. When they don’t get this we see increased classroom disruption, increased discipline referrals, and increased anxiety, all of which impacts learning.
The cricut, tools and vinyl sheets will allow us to make a colorful and playful sensory path students can use at any time, regardless of weather. Students will hop from frog to frog, slide their feet across ladders, jump from log to log, follow colorful footsteps and scale rocks on the wall. Each of the components of the sensory path will be cut from vinyl using the cricut and adhered to the floor and walls of a central hallway in my school.
Not only will these supplies help the general population of students, but our occupational, physical and behavioral therapists will be able to use the path to aid students with autism and other disabilities.
