Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I campus located in Pasadena, which is an overall Title I district. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to go to Pre-K. As our campus does not have a program and they would have to attend another school. These programs at other campuses fill up very quickly.
Many of our students were impacted by Hurricane Harvey this past August/September 2017, and have had their homes and lives altered in unforeseeable ways.
We are hopeful that our kiddos will not have to have the same kindergarten experience that our students last year did. However, if we do, we know they are resilient and will still have a safe place to come to at school.
Overall, we are an amazing classroom family, and use our growth mindset to strive to be the best we can be.
My Project
My students love to read books and earn points and prizes by taking comprehension tests on them thanks to Accelerated Reader (AR). Many of them come back every day ready to take a test and get a new book! I love seeing their interest in books, and find it fascinating to see the ones they are most drawn to.
Reading gives us a place to go when we have to stay where we are.
Many times throughout the year the library is closed due to testing, meetings, or the librarian is out. During these times my students do not have access to AR books or a vast variety of books that they enjoy. Having only been teaching Kindergarten for 2 years now, I do not have the grand library that many classrooms do. These books would help improve and expand our library.
The Froggy series books by Jonathan London will fill 2 buckets in our classroom library, giving my students an additional option to choose to read. While they may not be able to read all the text, these books would serve as a great resource to identify sight words, using illustrations to decode the text, and for retelling/sequencing stories.
I cannot wait to have a new group of kiddos who can immerse themselves into AR books inside our classroom, while easily find what they are looking for thanks to having picture coded categories, such as Froggy.
