I am the 6th - 8th grade science teacher in a K-8 building, on the eastern side of Cleveland, Ohio. We strive every day to create a safe, welcoming environment for all who enter! We teach in a low income, culturally diverse area, were 99% of our students qualify for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. In addition to a well rounded STEM focused, college-prep curriculum we offer many after school enrichment programs.
In addition to the 2 class sections of about 50 very eager, enthusiastic learners I teach per grade level, I am also our school’s science fair coordinator.
This project is important because it will allow students a different type of learning opportunity that they will probably always remember.
Every day in my class there is something to smile and laugh about. Because science should be “hands-on”, I am constantly looking for new ideas on how to make the lessons more engaging for the students. Without these opportunities, some of the more abstract information may become confusing. I approach teaching science as being the teacher you want to learn from; always trying to keep the lessons fun and engaging for the students while fostering a climate of active learning.
These kits will allow my students a first-hand learning opportunity in a way that they have never had before. Science can not be simply taught out of a textbook. The best science classes are ones where students experience science.
This project will give me the opportunity to push many of my students WAY out of their comfort zone, but it will also give them a new understanding of multiple scientific concepts like food webs and energy transformations.
I love that these kits have tools and resources that I can reuse while the consumable materials can be repurchased again in the following years, thus extending the life-time of this project
