Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach seventh grade reading in Nevada. Over 90% of my students receive free/reduced lunch. Most of my students are English Language Learners with many students arriving to America within the last five years.
Many of my students have great empathy for animals and often go out of their way to protect animals from harmful situations. However, I want my students to be inspired to think about how their actions like throwing away a plastic bottle affects animals. There are connections between daily actions and its effect on ecological life. The book features endangered owls and destruction of their natural habitat. One student was able to save them. In this way, students can be positive force for change, but still learn about the elements of literature.
However, our school library doesn't have the funds to purchase a class set of Hoot for our class. As the state of Nevada has experienced serious budget cuts, I don't expect to see any funds for books in the next couple of years. I would like to have 35 copies of Hoot, so that each student can have their own copy instead of having to share copies. I also would like an audio copy of the book in order to engage students in a dramatic reading of the book. English Language Learners do benefit from an active reading of the book that combines audio recording and teacher reading. With these resources, students will be able to have a fulfilling and positive experience reading this novel. I also plan to supplement the unit using informational and science texts so that students will receive a thorough ecology unit. Middle school students do not have an ecology unit built into the science curriculum, so I believe that this is an opportunity to showcase the environment, activism, and citizenship in one unit.
Your help will have a significant impact on how students view their relationship to the environment and ultimately, the world. Thanks to you, not only will my students walk away with strong ecology content and literature skills, but they will also gain a stronger engagement with the fragile ecosystem. You will be part of the change that will inspire many of my students to become scientists and ecologists!
