Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our amazing first-grade students come to school so eager to learn and are excited to be at school. The students come from culturally diverse backgrounds with 90% of them receiving free and reduced lunch. In addition, 90% of them are English Language Learners.
Many of our students' parents need to work multiple jobs to make ends meet, therefore it is difficult for our students to get support at home in their learning.
Furthermore, most of our students are not fortunate enough to have access to technology devices or headphones at home.
In addition, because they are first graders our students are very strong visual, auditory and hands-on learners. Utilizing technology enhances their learning in a variety of ways and they are so eager to use it.
My Project
Our students are always eager to use technology while creating projects, practicing various skills and working on technology intervention programs in the areas of math and language arts. With the use of good working headphones, our students are able to stay focused and are completely tuned in to what they are working on. Headphones also help students listen to voice recordings on their iPads without unnecessary background noise or when engaging in learning apps. Additionally, students will work with online reading and math intervention programs. These programs provide personalized learning on fundamental literacy and math skills, using research-based methods.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast has generously awarded our school a Collective Impact Grant, which will match dollar for dollar all funds raised through DonorsChoose or a maximum of $5,000 per school.
