I am a first grade teacher in an urban setting. My classroom of 20 diverse students serves a large percentage of children receiving free and reduced lunch.

I have the ominous but super-inspiring job of teaching children to read. The thing I most enjoy about teaching children to read is when they begin to make the connections needed to become fluent readers. Their ability takes on a life of its own and a sort of explosion of connections happens and they take off. The real challenge is that they are still little kids who want to have fun and play and they can only sit for a handful of minutes before they have to move to a new task that is fun and interesting.

Resources and materials that aid in this process help me make this happen. When I went on Donorschoose and shopped in their store I was inspired by the word family magnets and stamps, fluency builders and single strip word boards.

The most amazing thing about Donorschoose is that people who don't even know us give to us just because they care. It makes me, as a public school teacher, feel like the world cares about my students who seem to get the short end of the stick from the maze of bureaucracy.
