My students are passionate and energetic learners. All of the students that I work with are in EIP (Early Intervention Program). They work very hard to learn new things and take pride in their achievements. 100% of students at our school qualify for free lunch. My students come from different income levels and diverse backgrounds. Most of them come from low-income households with parents who struggle to cover basic expenses. Unfortunately, many of my students have little or no access to books at home; which limits their exposure to reading.
Despite the challenges, my students come to school every day eager to learn and ready to discover new topics.
My goal is to get my students interested in and excited about literacy. To achieve this goal I feel that I need books that appeal to their interests and reading levels. I hope by encouraging and motivating them to read it will help to build their confidence, independence, and overall reading performance.
My Project
The students that I serve this school year are all identified as struggling readers. They are all currently enrolled in our school's EIP program (Early Intervention Program). I work with these students in small group reading every day. Finding books on their level that they are interested in reading has been a challenge all school year. Recently my group began reading short a chapter book, and they were so proud of themselves when we finished it! They have really been hoping and asking to read more.
With your support, I am hoping to provide them with engaging, educational chapter books that are on their instructional level!
In choosing books for this project, I included ones that would also provide some insight into historical events like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Providing these chapter books to my students will help build their confidence in reading! These high interest books will also be ones that will make them WANT to read! Thank you so much for taking the opportunity to consider my project.
