Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a guidance counselor at an elementary school in the Bronx, New York. We are a kindergarten through 4th grade school with limited indoor and outdoor space for our students. We don't have a gymnasium for our children and our outdoor play area is broken up into 3 small play spaces. Our kids, like all kids, love to be outdoors for lunch recess! And our kids, like all kids, need supervised, planned play activities to help them enjoy their physical activity during lunch. We do the best we can with the limited space, and being able to run relay races, play hopscotch or jump rope is something all our kids look forward to each day. However, we do know that shooting basketball hoops is an activity that everyone of our kids (including our girls!) dream about doing outdoors! I am humbly requesting funding for two portable basketball hoops with 4 basketballs to be used in our playground areas each day at lunch. I believe our children need to run and jump and play as well as learn in school. I've noticed that planned, supervised physical activity outdoors at lunch time has a wonderful effect on our children - I think that it is a chance to be able to "blow off some steam" while playing and the children are more receptive to afternoon instruction in their classes afterwards. In addition, the supervision of an activity they enjoy leads to less bickering and arguing! I know our children would be thrilled to have this wonderful outdoor activity available to them! I thank you in advance for any help you can provide to us concerning this project.
