A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
The skills learned in gym are the foundations to their success. We start with building blocks, so they enhance the skills and tools with which they have been provided.
Each of my lessons comprises more than the physical activity; it includes all aspects of curricular learning, mindfulness, and self-soothing strategies.
PE is more than just fitness; it incorporates all concepts of learning and life. I want my students to understand that everything they’re learning in the regular classroom is applicable in health, fitness, teamwork, and society. What they learn is transferable into their home life, extracurricular activities, and future roles in society. However, it’s subconscious learning because it’s exciting; they don’t realized that they are using the same math, science, and language concepts previously learned, but with higher level critical thinking aspects. The highest level of knowledge acquisition is when learning is applied to new concepts in new situations.
My students can achieve greatness regardless of socio-economic status, race, gender, academic performance, or family background. We are a public, PK-3 school, in a rural community. Our 305 student demographics are 96% free/reduced lunch; 52% White, 42% Black, 4% Hispanic, 2% Asian. 88% of my students are below the poverty line.
My Project
A successful auto-didactic physical education classroom enables students to exercise, play, explore, and think creative and critically in a friendly, safe, and orderly environment where they can set personal, attainable goals.
All equipment is cross-curricular, expressing knowledge acquisition in science, math, languages, health, and nutrition daily.
Everything motivates student discovery and healthy physical choices. These tools are the first steps to our self-directed, constructivist, and cross-curricular environment.
Each day I place the vocabulary words on the board (Spanish and English) incorporating rigorous and higher-order cross-curricular words. White boards are essential for my tactile, kinesthetic, and visual learners for self-assessment and reflection.
Pedometers will be used in (1) math for learning measurement conversions, to show their breadth of counting abilities, hypothesize how many steps they can take before and after activity; (2) science to calculate distance of total steps using scientific method estimating measurement, testing theories for conclusions; (3) team-building as they work together, sharing pedometers; each person embodies the steps in the scientific process, repeating process with different variances; (4) language with rigorous bilingual vocabulary with each lesson.
Stethoscopes will be utilized in (1) science for measuring resting and maximal heart rate, investigating cardio respiratory systems, functions of the internal organs; (2) sportsmanship in working together assessing others’ heart rates; (3) health in determining how heart rate is effected by exercise; (4) mindfulness by learning how to breathe to calm the mind and bring the body into a state of positivity; (5) math to count beats in an allotted time frame.
Your generous support will enable my children to build a safe, exciting, and team-building environment, where they can create, design, and explore real-life investigations and establish lifelong health and fitness. They will use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to meet challenges, design and create individual activities, and compete nationally.
