This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Located 20 miles north of Boston, Lawrence, Massachusetts remains a melting pot of diverse cultures. Already one of the lowest economic cities in the Commonwealth, the increasing unemployment rates are making it more and more difficult for students to acquire basic luxuries such as novels that will kick-start their desire to read. Lawrence native, Kenneth Tingle, published a novel The Girl in the Italian Bakery just over a year ago. In discussions with my students, who are for the most part very reluctant readers, I cannot get them to stop asking when we will be reading Tingle’s novel. Many of my students are currently reading at below grade level, thus it is very easy for them to become discouraged and want to give up. However, because Tingle’s novel is set in the City of Lawrence, not only would my students enjoy the story, they would be able to make a direct connection with their community. I have found over the past three years one of the key aspects to teaching is making that real-world connection for my students. Tingle’s The Girl in the Italian Bakery is that connection, and is that hook into reading that my reluctant readers have been searching for! With that in mind, I am looking to have donated a classroom set of 25 new copies of Kenneth Tingle’s novel The Girl in the Italian Bakery. I hope that with the novel, I can help turn my students on to the wonders of reading.
