I remember getting my first copy of J.R.R. Tolkien's, The Hobbit, when I was in ninth grade. I thought, "why would anyone want to read this?" After the first chapter I was hooked! I am still a huge fan of science fiction and fantasy literature. Now, being in the shoes of my ninth grade English teacher, I understand why she "forced" us to read The Hobbit. Part of teaching ninth graders the English language is opening their minds to new ideas, strange characters and places and especially new ways to solve old problems. With this in mind, I would like to purchase a class set of Tolkien's classic, The Hobbit, for my classroom along with a homework packet and a teacher's guide. By having a classroom set of The Hobbit, the impact would reach not only the 130 regular education students that daily move through my ninth grade English classroom, but also the 20+ special education students which sit in my desks. Also, Hurricane Katrina brought over 30 new students to our school, many of which are now in my care. The project would include the reading of the novel, in-class discussions and activities on the events, activities on characters and places within the novel, group projects including problem solving, reasoning skills, creative thinking, and art. All 150 of my students will participate in this novel unit. It never ceases to amaze me when many students find that they too have become die-hard fans of fantasy literature!
