Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My bilingual students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. In addition to having to assimilate a new culture and language in a new country, many of them come with poor academic skills in their native language. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
I am implementing learning stations in my classroom to ensure that all ELL students receive the full range of services they need—both to bring them to English proficiency as well as to improve their performance on academic content areas.
At our school, 100% of the students receive free lunch as they live in one of the poorest cities in the US. When they leave our classrooms, they are faced with the reality of a city crumbling down around due to high crime rates and poor administration. My goal is to inspire students to believe that with a proper education, they can change the city.
My students need high quality headphones and Chromebooks to work on Edpuzzle stations, investigation stations where they can further explore the science concepts at their own pace.
My Project
All of our bilingual students want to have the opportunity to learn English and be successful. There are tons of educational videos and apps, interactive labs and simulations that will give students the ability to work independently in science learning stations. Headphones are great for the students because they can focus, listen, and practice at their own pace while the teacher is able to provide guided instruction to small groups. As they progress, they will be able to do team and independent work to build. This will enhance the academic environment in the classroom and will build their confidence as independent learners.
