Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Including a wide range of periodicals in my classroom library would provide a hook for my students to read non-fiction. The eye-catching titles, headings, and pictures invite students to tackle new and challenging topics in areas of health, science, and social studies.
I teach 21 curious 4th grade students in a self-contained classroom in an elementary school that serves approximately 500 students in grades Pre-K through 8. Less than 40% of my 4th grade students can read at grade level according to a national norm referenced test. A variety of periodicals would build their background knowledge and their vocabulary which would have a positive impact on their reading comprehension. Periodicals often present news and information in the form of charts and graphs which connects reading to math, an important concept in which my students need more authentic experiences.
The materials neccessary to add this exciting resource to my clssroom would be age-appropriate periodicals on a variety of topics. The 21 fourth grade students in my classroom would have access to the periodicals. My students are provided 30 minutes of instructional time to independently select and read a book, or now, hopefully, a periodical of their choice.
I want my student to have access to engaging and high quality non-fiction periodicals on a variety of topics. The periodical will increase their curiousity, background knowledge and vocabulary on a variety of topics in all subject areas.
