I teach first grade at a Title I school. Many of our families are economically challenged, which means students often lack the typical life experiences that help them build the background knowledge necessary for academic success. Nevertheless, they are very capable of learning and have a great desire to do so!
Together we "work hard and get smart"(our school motto)!

My Project
The best way for readers to improve their reading is to read! My goal is to fill my classroom with books and give students plenty of opportunities to read them.
First graders need informational texts to increase their schema on various topics.
Nonfiction texts grab students' attention and engage them in the reading process. They help readers build background knowledge on topics of which they have limited experiences.
These informational text will have a huge impact on my students' reading growth! They will grow my students into life long readers!
