We are in the process of building our science department. Our students need additional reference materials to supplement their texts and lectures. Guide books with vivid visual images capture the student's interests as well as providing different perspectives and in-depth information.
We are a public school with 62% free and reduced lunches.
Many of our students come to school in order to get breakfast and lunch. But their poverty does not decrease their desire to learn or their ability to contribute to the community. These young people are eager to learn and we believe that they deserve the best that we can give them in terms of material resources. We are trying to build a top of the line science department and we need to invest in current reference materials. The books that we are requesting are visually appealing and intellectually stimulating - this will encourage our students to read them!
My Project
We are requesting a set of 20 Golden Guide reference books as well as an additional text on poisonous animals and plants. These books are thorough in terms of information and beautiful in terms of their photography. This would nearly double the number of scientific reference books contained in our library. Many times our students are discouraged when they can't find the information that they need to complete a research project. These reference books will make sure that the information is available when our students need it.
Most of us live in such wealth that it seems odd to think of books as a scarcity.
But many of my students don't have books at home. This makes it even more important that they have access to a variety of books at school. But all students benefit from the possibilities promised by books. Having the book to hold, to touch the pictures, to read the words, and to understand some new thing. Isn't that what learning is all about?
