My students come to music class excited to learn! I teach elementary music at a Title 1 School where over 80% of my students are socio-economically disadvantaged. Many of my students receive specialized reading instruction to support their English language acquisition and improve their reading skills.
Reading is the foundation for success!
I want to give my students every opportunity to succeed in school and beyond. Developing strong reading skills is crucial, and the first step is to instill a love for words and what they can express. When we bring books to life in the music room, a lifelong passion for reading begins!
Music and children's literature share powerful connections - rhythm, flow, inflection, pattern, cadence, phrasing, style, voice, expression, and more. In music class, we add singing, movement, expressive speech, drama, and classroom instruments to children's literature. Books come to life, and my students' eyes are opened to the magic of words!
Let's harness the power of music to spark a passion for language and books!
Music has inherent value, and students certainly benefit from a comprehensive music education throughout their public school years. For students who need extra support in reading proficiency, music class can also be a place to make a personal connection with stories in a safe and fun environment. We can use music to enrich the early reading experiences of young readers, and begin the journey of discovering the joy of reading!
