Do you remember visiting your school library? Think back to the excitement of discovering new worlds or revisiting the adventures of your favorite characters. Or maybe the library was not your favorite place until you connected with a character that made reading meaningful to you. My students seek books about topics that interest them, that have characters they relate to, that teach them new things and take them to new worlds.
My students love to visit the library and they flood in each morning to ask about their favorite topics and characters.
My goal is to meet the reading needs of my students by having the titles they crave. I also want to hook reluctant readers with books that will foster a growing love of reading and curiosity about the world.
Finally, my students are creative and inventive thinkers with many gifts and talents. They love to demonstrate what they learn through hands-on projects that integrate literature, art, and technology.
My Project
High readers, low readers, old readers, young readers, they all ask for graphic novels!
Help us foster this excitement about reading by providing students with graphic novels for their library.
I am asked every day to point students to the graphic novels shelf in our library. This shelf is always empty. They are the most popular books in the library and unfortunately the books of which we have the fewest titles. And these books, like Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier, are important because they are high interest and fun for even the most reluctant readers. They also help students think deeply about elements of storytelling as they analyze images AND text.
