My students need an extensive and diverse classroom library that enables exploration in a wide variety of genres, as well as foster positive attitudes towards reading.
Today's students read everyday in school, but how often are they reading something that they love or are interested in? By providing my students with a diverse classroom library I hope to foster a life-long love of reading as well as to open their minds to the endless possibilities of literature.
My students are seniors who come from diverse socio economic and cultural backgrounds.
Such diversity encourages open-mindedness and exploration, traits I wish them to have towards literature. While many of my students already display a love of reading, just as many struggle due to negative connotations towards reading. Others have simply forgotten what it is like to sit down with a good book. I pride myself with having a strong class library, but with close to 170 students, the supply is not enough for the demand. It is my hope that with your generosity I will be able to provide the library that my students will love and deserve.
My Project
My students, like so many today, read constantly in school. However, the texts that they are reading are not always ones that they are interested in. My goal is to provide designated class time every week specifically for " recreational reading". The goal simply being to provide a relaxing, low-pressure environment, where each student can select a book of their choosing. This time and the resources provided will benefit my students immensely because they are being given time to explore their tastes in literature that in today's education environment is not always provided.
It is my hope that my students will learn that making independent reading a priority is valuable in shaping who they are as individuals. As they embark on their final year of high school it is more imperative than ever to foster their interests and attitudes towards reading. Whether they choose to go to college or not, reading will be a factor in their adult lives. Hopefully it is one that is nourishing.
Young people need to read.
Too often we are distracted by the various technological advances our society has created. The simple joy of opening a book and feeling the soft pages between our fingers has been replaced by smartphones and social media. By going "old school" my students will re-discover or newly discover the excitement, heartache, adventure, and possibility of literature. They will not be alone on this journey since you and I will be there to help them!
