Help me give my students nearly 50 high-interest, browsable nonfiction titles that will give them a positive association with a book, regardless of their reading level.
Our 7th-12th grade students come from a variety of cultural, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds. Our halls are filled with immigrants who just moved to this country, as well as Native Alaskans whose families have been here for centuries.
It's important that all students, regardless of their reading level, have a positive experience with a book.
Sometimes students claim that they don't like to read, but the reality is that they have not yet found the right book. The best option for many of these students is high-interest nonfiction. These "hook books," as I like to call them, can set students on a path of inquiry and literacy.
My Project
Students who struggle with reading often dread library visits and quiet reading time, but high interest, non-fiction titles can change that mindset. If we give students books about topics they enjoy, they will happily browse these titles and make a positive association with a book.
High interest nonfiction books can help decrease behavior problems while increasing literacy.
Titles about sports, Minecraft, mythology, world records, the military, animals, and video games can win over even the most reluctant of readers. These areas of the library are very popular, and we never have enough books to serve all the students who flock to read them.
This grant would fund nearly 50 additional titles for our shelves, giving more variety and selection to our students. Help me hook students into reading with these new books!
