This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 6th-8th graders. The school is in a high-needs inner-city neighborhood. The students are very interested in learning new things but the school has very limited resources. It is very frustrating having students who love to learn but do not have materials or experiences to support that desire.
I enjoy motivating and inspiring my students to be their best, so understanding and appreciating the value of education is very critical.
They deserve to have educational experiences and resources that support the high goals that they work towards every day. That's why it is so frustrating that all of the budget cuts made by the big decision makers seem to directly impact my students.
I am doing my best to try to bring positive, meaningful learning opportunities to my classroom, and I strive to make it a place that my students love to enter every day.
My Project
Snacking today for many young people means hot chips, lots of candy, and large bottles of sugary juice. Our youth are developing eating habits that can cause serious health issues. I teach math and science to 6th-8th graders in an inner city school. I want to do lessons in science that teach healthier eating habits.
The snacks I am requesting in this proposal will be used to support the lessons I plan to teach.
Many people learn best by actually doing things and engaging in experiences that support the learning. While reading about healthy foods and learning how to read food labels will help, actually getting to enjoy healthy snack choices will make a huge difference for my students. Hopefully having these items will encourage them to pick up a granola bar as opposed to a candy bar, or a cranberry juice as opposed to a can of pop, and they will learn to actually enjoy these foods as part of a healthier diet.
