I would like to teach my students to pay attention to details. How, you ask? Microscopes! I teach a class of 32 inner city students (90% poverty). I teach them language arts, social studies, math and science. Most subjects are easier to teach without resources. Science, however, requires materials in order for the kids to "get it". Other than books, I have nothing. With microscopes they will be able to see first hand many of the things we discuss on a daily basis. All we need are some cheap, affordable microscopes. After that I can teach them how to make and prepare slides. To make things more worthwhile, I plan to share the resources with other classes, so this gift will affect our entire school. With microscopes, science will finally have some real, tangible meaning, not something lost in a textbook.
