This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are pushing towards project based learning and thrive on hands-on experiences. Currently, our PTA doesn't provide money to assist in these purchases and we are still trying to build a science lab. It would be amazing if we had a mini science lab in our own classroom!
We are a very large school, 800+ students, with class sizes of around 26.
Our PTA is still growing and state funding is minimal. We have great aspirations but a long way to go! My class size is currently 26 students. We are not a Title 1 school but we do qualify for Title 1 funding. Each of our students qualify for a free lunch and free breakfast each day.
My Project
Imagine being able to see the skin cells as they're growing on your own body! Or look at the class pet lizard skin cells... Or the thread of a shirt... Or the patterns in a leaf! These mini microscopes are portable and easy to use. They could easily be put against the skin, a tree trunk, or a living bug without ever affecting the natural environment!
We are pushing towards being more hands-on, unit based, and project based.
We spend an entire 9 week session on ecosystems and animal classification. Specifically, we discuss the differences between plant and animal cells, labeling cells, etc. By being able to have these easily accessible and transportable, we can view so MANY things in our daily lives. Imagine the descriptive essays that could come from the assistance of these!
