Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an upper Manhattan school where 91% of the students receive free or reduced fee lunch and majority are English Language Learners. For the families of many of these children it is difficult for them to purchase the basic supplies their children need for the classroom.
Often I assign my second graders (up to 28!) project based homework that requires cutting, coloring, measuring or gluing. The children love these projects and it allows me to integrate art as well as family participation.
The problem is many children come to me and say "I don't have glue at home", "I don't have scissors at home", or "I don't have a ruler at home."
If I allow children to take class supplies home, chances are they will not be returned. I would like to solve this problem by providing all the students with a homework supply box. I will give it to the parents on Back to School Night to encourage their participation in their child's homework. This box would be kept at the students' home to be always readily available.
It would consist of a pencil box filled with the supplies necessary (scissors, glue, a ruler, an eraser, and crayons) for completing special homework projects with ease.
Now my students will be able to start their work without being embarrassed to tell the teacher they don't have supplies, as well as without shouting "MOM, I need glue, and where are the scissors?!"
Finally, homework without hassle!
