My students need their own pack of pencils, a sharpener, an eraser, crayons, a glue stick, and a pencil case so they have the proper supplies to complete their homework at home.
My students are an amazing group of caring, funny, and kind 6-year-olds. They are a diverse group; many students having special needs and most are English language learners. They all come from very different home environments. Some of my students are lucky enough to live with their parents and siblings, while others may live with their grandparents or other guardians while their parents are out of state for work.
Many of my students tend to lack resources, experience, and exposure from home, so it is important for me to provide them with experiences that are both academic and fun.
My Project
"I know you must have a pencil to use at home!" and "Why did you color this with a pen? The directions said to color it with a crayon!" are some of the things I found myself saying to many students when I first started teaching. As time went on, I began to realize I was mistaken.
Each year I am shocked to find out that there are so many students who do not have a simple pencil at home to complete their homework.
Teachers often assume that students do not do their homework properly or at all because they choose not to. I have found that this is not always the case. Over the past few years at my school, I have come to the realization that some students do not have the proper supplies available at home to complete their homework. Often, I will find some classroom materials stowed away in their folders or file boxes, homework is done in pen or marker, and when the work requires coloring or gluing, it is never completed. With your help, I would like to provide my students with supply packs that include such items as crayons, a glue stick, an eraser, and pencils so that every student can successfully complete their homework at home.
