Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach kindergarten in a low-income community in Queens, New York. Many of my students have very few books in their homes. In kindergarten, by contrast, they have a chance to select books themselves, keep them for a week or more, and read them over and over on their own or with a buddy. Students love the chance to choose and hold their own books. Unfortunately, we don\'t have a good way for each student to keep \"my\" books separate from \"your\" books. I provide zip-lock bags for students, but the bags rip easily, must be replaced regularly, look messy, and don\'t foster careful handling of precious books. The bags are not large enough to hold the small books students read by themselves, plus the other types of books they read at different times across the school year, such as non-fiction books and favorite story books. A better alternative to bags would be metal magazine files. The files would be large enough to provide good temporary homes for each student\'s books. They would look neat and protect books better. They would prevent arguments about whose bag that book belongs in, and they would eliminate expense and classroom time now spent replacing ripped bags. They would even be more environmentally friendly than using multiple plastic bags each school year. This small improvement would go far to making the classroom a happier, more book- and reader-friendly place.
