Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first graders in a high-need community! The school is a low-income, high-poverty grade school in California. Our school is a Title I school where many of the students are homeless.
Even though they face many challenges such as being homeless, our students come to school excited and highly motivated to learn.
My students' come from home with hard working parents that work several low paying jobs. Often those low paying job are not sufficient to provide all their needs. They call cars, motels, and over-crowded apartments their homes.
My Project
Our elementary school students are offered breakfast and lunch daily at school. For students living in poverty, weekends are the hardest because they are not given 3 meals a day. Having a few healthy snacks and basic hygiene supplies in their backpack makes being homeless easier. Coming to school clean and healthy means the students can concentrate on learning and not worry about other things. These supplies with be added to the school current program. Students or families can stop by the "store" and are gifted essential supplies. They include toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, school uniforms and personal supplies. We also keep snacks and canned goods on hand.
