My students need comfortable, flexible seating for their best learning experience. Recent research has shown that flexible seating gives students autonomy and choice, which leads to more enthusiastic learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a small, rural town in Colorado. We are part of the Title I program, and more than 60% of our students are on free and reduced-price lunch. A large percentage of our students are emerging bilingual. The students at our school are energetic, bright, and eager to learn.
The new school year is about to begin!
We have school from Monday through Thursday, and our days are long to make sure that we can meet Colorado's instructional minute requirements. These long days mean that the students are with me in the classroom much longer than they are actually at home.
I would love to make my classroom feel more like home in order to ease anxieties, increase student engagement, and create a safe and loving environment.
My Project
This flexible seating couch is part of a larger plan to set up my classroom for student engagement and learning. My first graders love to be able to choose a spot in the classroom where they can do their BEST learning.
Choosing their own special spot is a privilege for my students.
It helps them feel ownership in the classroom as well as in their own learning. This adorable couch will be the cornerstone of our classroom library. Students will be able to relax and read, work in their math books, or participate in partner talks while using this couch.
