My Students

I teach preschoolers with developmental delays in a Title I school serving a significant number of low-income families. Additionally, due to our location near a large military base, many of my students have a parent in the military and may experience a high level of stress due to parental separation or frequent relocations. The adult literacy rate in our community is lower than the national average. Additionally some of our families were impacted by the recent hurricane.

Parents these days are busy with many demands and need our help in discovering high quality literature to share with their children.

Additionally, very few of the families are able to come in to school to volunteer or share the school experience with their child. In order to help parents become more involved with my curriculum and to enhance their child's learning at home, I want to create a library of literacy bags. Each bag would include a high quality children's book featured in my classroom in a quality hardback format, a stuffed animal , and a notebook for families to share stories of how they spent the week with the visiting character.

My Project

My students need greater support to develop early literacy skills. I want l to give families the opportunity to interact with a true variety of high quality children's literature and help spread their children's enthusiasm for these books from my classroom to their homes.

Each book requested is a book I regularly use with students and I can't wait for them to share the books with their families.

Children are especially excited when they get to take home the character in the book and spend a week with that character. By keeping a home-school journal, the family can write about their experiences with the character and we will read each entry aloud to the class to help make the connection between life and writing more concrete.

Many of my families and community resources have been impacted by the recent hurricane so I additionally am hoping to provide additional resources for them to share with their children during the process of rebuilding. Some of the stories are simply classics which encouraging retelling and early word development (The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Sheep in a Jeep), I have also selected stories which deal with complex emotions and challenges (KnuffleBunny, Llama Llama Mad at Mama). Because my students have special needs, I have included stories which help children learn about differences and self-esteem (I Don't Want to be a Frog, A Color of His Own). The characters associated the books are important because many of my students are in an early concrete stage of development and need the object to help them connect with the stories.
