Help me give my students hands-on learning with mini wind turbines to enhance their learning at home.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My school provides opportunities for children from all cultures, areas, and various incomes an opportunity to learn and thrive within the district. Helping to fund my project, you'll become part of a community committed to ensuring that our students make it to and through college.
All of our students receive free meals, over 90% are students of color, and just over 15% are special needs students.
A child that attends our school is four times more likely to graduate from college than their peers, and we hope to see that number continue to rise in the coming years.
With this project, I would like to inspire my students to learn about how someone with the desire to solve a problem overcame many obstacles to positively impact his community. Through scientific research, ingenuity, innovation, and grit, the protagonist in The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind created wind power for his village. This came at a time when his village was experiencing drought and famine. As students are reading about a boy making a difference in their community with a wind turbine, they can create their own wind turbine. Following our reading and discussion of this true story, students will design and build their own wind turbines, using an engaging and challenging engineering design challenge. Students will test their turbines, collect data, and make modifications to reach their engineering goals at home.
At home students still need hands-on learning to inspire, the mini wind turbine will alternative energies, and this project would be a great addition to our reading on the wind.
It also teaches an all-important lesson of relevancy, and why science, math, and reading are crucial. Students will get a first-hand account of how innovation in STEM is made by regular individuals who have a strong interest and determination towards making progress. These are the 21st Century academic and life skills that my students need to succeed.
