My students are a tight-knit group. They fight hard, play hard, learn hard, and love hard! Our school is a very VERY rural school. It is so rural that our community it just that....a community. We are not even in an incorporated town. Our student body is made up of many low-socioeconomic families. Having come from a similar family as a child, it is a personal challenge for me to give them the tools to break those poverty cycles. What better way to do that than through the power of learning?!
Many times dynamite comes in small packages and I can assure you that my students are explosive!
They absolutely LOVE science, especially when we are doing labs and hands-on activities where we are applying what we've learned.
My Project
Most students are so excited to begin learning about science as they enter middle school, but become fearful of it as they enter high school. Providing hands-on experience to enrich the learning of the curriculum taught in the class has had direct impact on my students' learning, leading to the LOVE of science from start to finish. The gift of these kitchen home lab kits will enable my students to continue learning during our virtual Fridays. We will be able to have labs together, via Google Classroom or Zoom, while every student has the materials needed to participate in our home labs.
It is my responsibility to instill the LOVE of SCIENCE in every student, regardless of socio-economic backgrounds.
We must insure every student has access to the materials needed so that they experience success. Virtual education has wonderful opportunities, but I believe it will be much more impactful when students can apply the lessons taught throughout the week during face-to-face instruction, and discover the endless opportunities that science can bring to them!
